South head and Watsons Bay

How would you like to swim or hang around the beach with this as your view?

Well, you can at Watsons Bay.

It's a real testament to Sydney's waters that you can swim here. In a Malaysian harbour, you could probably walk on the waters.

On a warm autumn day, we headed there via train and ferry. We stopped at Doyle's for fish and chips, where I had my best fish and chips ever. I don't consider fish and chips gourmet food, but if you ever had a hankering for fish and chips, it's Doyle's you should go to. Of course, I might feel obliged to say that because it was a busy Sunday and we waited an hour for fish and chips! It sure tasted very good by the time we finally had lunch!

The beach at Watson's Bay is about a 10-15 minute fairly easy walk (we had 3 kids with us) away from the wharf. The beach by itself is not an outstanding beach, but the location makes up for it.

If you are at Watsons Bay, don't miss the rock melon ice cream. Very refreshing.

Also, don't miss the walk that starts from the edge of the beach. After hiking to the top, I turned my head back and an involuntary "wow" escaped my lips. The kids were happy to check out the lighthouse and the cannons.

If you are with kids though, you may want to take note (well, you may want to, even if you aren't).
There is a nudist beach along the walk. When I read about this nudist beach before going, I thought it was along the walk, but a bit removed. Not quite. You walk right by it. It was quite heavily populated on that Sunday.

  1. Love it here! Have you been to Parsley Bay? I particularly like that one as you can go straight into the water without getting sandy! Also Jean I wanted to get in touch with you about something. Do you have an email address?
