Unconditional love

Number 1 has problems understanding unconditional love. I struggled with it as well and I suspect it's a Chinese mentality issue - you get what you deserve, and you have to earn what you get. While this has helped Chinese across the world prosper over centuries, it doesn't explain how you can get something you are unworthy of.

He does love Number 3 greatly, and has always wanted a baby sister, so after she was born, I came across an idea to explain unconditional love to him.

"Do you love Number 3?" I asked him.
"Yes, of course," he said.
"And did she do anything to deserve this love? Did she give you anything to love her?"
"No," he said, as a smile creeped up on his lips.
"Did she do anything, a dance, or look a certain way, so you'd love her?"
"No," he said, as the smile grew into a grin.
"And yet... You love her. And you have loved her since the day she was born."
"Yes," he said, without a shadow of a doubt.
"And you loved her even before she was born."
"Yes," he said.
"That is unconditional love. And that," I said, "is how God loves you."
