Best deal for Taronga Zoo for families

About a year and a half ago, we visited Hungry Jacks and ordered the kids meals. Along with it came a voucher for a 'buy one adult ticket, free one child ticket'.  I kept the voucher for a whole year until we finally made our first trip to Taronga early this year.

Recently, we brought a visitor to the zoo, and I looked around for the best deal I could get. I found a 10% off the ticket price via Ticketek, I found someone selling a '25% off four tickets' voucher via Gumtree for $10, and the family discount of 15% offered by the zoo. The best deal for Taronga Zoo still is the Hungry Jacks kids meal voucher, which comes to a total of $88 for two adults, two kids, and beats the $115 family ticket by the zoo. I called up the Hungry Jacks outlet to see if the offer was still on, bought the meals for about $5 each, brought the meals to the zoo and saved on lunch for the kids too!

I think Taronga Zoo is amazing but it isn't a particularly spectacular zoo in terms of the animals or the shows. The most spectacular thing about it is the location. On my first visit, I said to Hubs, "Wow, can you imagine the value of the real estate this zoo is sitting on?" It has a harbour waterfront address! If you are driving, do go past the parking and make a trip around the back of the zoo where the jetty is - that's where you can really appreciate how outstanding a location it is. I just love planting my feet in spots like these (Central Park in New York is another place) - it's a testament to how money doesn't always win.

This is the backdrop for the bird show. How could any other backdrop be more amazing?

Tips for the zoo :

1) The queues for the shows start about half an hour before the show. In peak periods like summer, best to go half hour or 20 minutes before to get a good spot.

2) There is a little water spot, so if your kids like to get wet, bring spare clothes.

3) Go early to make a day of it. It took us two trips to fully explore the park and see both bird and seal shows.

4) There is ample parking, although pricey at $16 for the day
