The best thing about 5-year olds

I just love 5 year-old boys. They love their mamas with all their heart and soul and aren't afraid to say so. They love with great intensity and abandonment and wonder. Number One used to be like this when he was 5, but has acquired some of the self-restraint that comes as we get older.

I regularly get a surprise "I love you, mama," from Number Two, coupled with hugs and kisses and nuzzles.

On some days, Number Two seems almost surprised by the volume of his emotion. The other day I caught him beaming at me. He said, "Aww, mama, I love you so much!" while throwing his arms wide and hopping around to demonstrate inadequately how much.

Lately, he has taken to saying, "I love you more than anyone else in the whole wide world." When Hubs heard this, he asked Number Two, "What about me?"

Number Two, being the savvy policitician that he is, said, "Same."

"And koko (your brother)?" asked Hubs.

"Same," replied Number Two.

"That can't be right," teased Hubs.

Number Two slapped his head and said, "Aww, you just don't get it! I love mama more than anyone else, and I love you and koko same as mama, so I love you more than anyone else."

A few days ago however, when Hubs was not present, he gave a slightly different version.

"Mama, I love you more than anyone else in the whole wide world," he said to me, throwing his arms around me.

"What about papa?" asked Number One.

Number Two grinned guiltily, looked around furtively and said in a little voice, "Just a beeeeet less."

"I love mama and papa equal." snorted Number One.

5 year old boys...they grow up too fast. :p
