The flutterbys

Today is the first day of school for Number One.

Parents are always somewhat nervous on the first day - whether it's kindy, school, or college. Will he get lost? Will he make friends? It's a step that takes the bird away from the nest, to a place where you can't be there for him 24/7, whether it's to elbow that bully or point out all the things he is doing wrong.

But back to school. It's the second time in one year and one month that Number One has a 'first day of school', with both experiences being in different countries. When we told him last year about the move to another country, he took it well enough but said he would miss all his friends at school.

"But you'll make new ones," I said.
"But what if they don't like me," he asked plaintively.
I gave the template answer: "Of course, they will", and hoped I would be right.

  1. Yeah, changing schools is always hardest, but I have found that kids are more resilient than we give them credit for, esp at this age (they say if you need to make any changes, do so before 8 or 9). Hope he's making new friends easily!
